How upholstery courses operate

Learn upholstery skills on our upholstery courses.

Recreational courses

We are delighted to announce the dates for the September 12 week recreational classes. These will begin w/c 13th September and end w/c 6th December. There will be a break for half term w/c 25th October. These are not available to book online at the moment so please enquire via email

Students on our weekly recreational upholstery courses work in small groups of mixed abilities and experience. New students are encouraged to begin with a small item of furniture such as a drop in seat, a small footstool, or even a headboard. All equipment is available to use, but students are welcome to bring their own tools if they prefer.

On our recreational courses advice and teaching is very hands on and students will learn upholstery at their own pace in a friendly and fun environment. Students who are beginning their upholstery journey will learn the basic skills required to progress to more advanced upholstery projects. Students with some upholstery experience and who want to refine their skills or learn new techniques are equally welcome. The upholstery training courses are taught by Jan who is City and Guilds qualified and previously taught upholstery and sewing for Kirklees College.

Both modern and traditional upholstery techniques are taught, so whether you want to learn how to use modern foam with staple guns, or traditional stuffing and webbing, you will find what you need at Manorhouse School of Upholstery.

What's included in the price?

Tools are available to use on the course. Materials and essentials such as tacks, staples and other ancillaries are available to buy at minimal cost. Also on offer is a wide variety of fabrics for purchase at below retail price. Refreshments are available on site for a minimal cost, and local shops offer a range of refreshments if required. (The money made from sales of tea and coffee is donated to a local charity at the end of each block of courses)

Items of furniture are not included. Most students spend a few pounds on material and essentials such as fixings to prepare an item to the stage where it is ready for a top cover. All that is then required is a metre or two of top cover fabric, the cost of which will vary depending on the type and size.

Modern Upholstery course

Our Modern Upholstery course is a 12 day upholstery course designed around a comprehensive set of skills and items to help you master modern upholstery.  As well as covering core modern skills this course is an ideal route if you are planning to set up your own upholstery business. The course includes 6 upholstery projects plus all the essential knowledge needed to begin operating from your home or small workshop. For full details follow this link. This is an ideal "upholstery for beginners" course but equally suitable for someone with experience who is looking to take the next step.

Soft furnishing courses - blinds and curtains

These differ to our upholstery courses in that all students follow the same programme at the same pace. All students learn to make a sample blind which illustrates the techniques required to make a roman blind of any size. More advanced skills and techniques can be developed on further courses.

Weekend courses

If you want something more compact than the weekly courses, our 1 day (Saturday) weekend upholstery courses include just about everything that you need to create a beautiful footstool.

Created as an introduction to the skills of upholstery, your footstool project will start with a solid base, foam and legs; and during the day you will learn to use upholstery tools and materials, as well as the techniques and skills required to create your footstool. All you need to choose is the fabric for your top cover.

You will learn how to work with fabric to get the best from the pattern, how to fold and cut corners, how to shallow button and how to finish a project. You will also have a choice of waxes to finish your legs to complement your chosen fabric.

We can also tailor short courses around small group needs and particular projects or skills.
